Canterbury wins basketball
Canterbury withstood a determined late rally from Nelson to win the final of the Canadian Goodwill men’s indoor basketball tournament at Blenheim on Saturday.
It won the match, 64-63, but the honours of the second half went to Nelson, which fought back tenaciously after trailing by 11 points. Nelson’s bustling tactics (upset the attacking rhythm lof the taller Canterbury jplayers, some of whom were probably feeling the effects of a strenuous programme—[three matches in the one day. Good team-work by Canterbury enabled it to lead 35-30 at half-time, but many errors were made in the second half.
Nelson was well served by the Harding brothers, who sank an outstanding number of long-range goals. The 6ft Bin J. Walsh and A. Wright also emerged with credit for Nelson.
For Canterbury, J. R. Fairweather and the young S. Ferguson gave good performances, and K. McMaster shot accurately. Scorers were:

In other matches, Canterbury played particularly well in beating Marlborough, 115-38. after having led, 58-12. at half-time, and it defeated Hutt Valley, 67-31. Against Marlborough, the Canterbury scorers were: Petersen 18, Fairweather 16. Millard 16, B. Goodwin 15, Ferguson 15, McMaster H2, Dimock 10, Manthei 6, Dickel 4, Guthrie 3. Successful shooters against Hutt Valley were: Dimock 11, Fairweather 10, McMaster 10, Millard 8, Goodwin 6, Dickel 6, Petersen 6, Manthei 4, Ferguson 4. Guthrie 2. Other results were: Nelson 81, Hutt Valley 44; Nelson 104, Marlborough 28; Hutt Valley 75, Marlborough 47. In the women s section, Canterbury lost the final to Nelson. 40-?2. Canterbury had looked convincing in beating Hutt Valley (63-66) and Marlborough (86-33) in earlier matches, but its players were unable to penetrate the tight zone defence employed by Nelson. Other results: Nelson 90, Marlborough 54; Hutt Valley 78, Marlborough 36; Nelson 49, Hutt Valley 48.
