Brigade to the rescue
The flag of Japan nearly did not wave at the Christchurch Town Hall to greet the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan on Saturday.
While the flag was being run up in the morning — by a man of military experience — a capricious gust wrapped it firmly round the halyards. There was then no progress, either up or down, military experience and imprecations notwithstanding. Finally, somebody did the next best thing to calling a policeman—he called the fire brigade. Thanks to the brigade the flag was untangled and at full hoist when the Royal party hove into view.
