(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) BUENOS AIRES, May 20. President Lanusse has ordered the lifting .of martial! law in Argentina, but has warned the Army against attempting a military coup. Martial law was declared in Buenos Aires and five | provinces on May 1, in | response to a wave of | Leftist guerrilla killings ; and the kidnapping of. senior military officers. No ; such attack has been re- ; ported during martial law. . which covered more than , two-thirds of the country’s ■ population. . President Lanusse, head ; of the latest in a series of i military governments which i have ruled the country since < 1966, will step down next 1 Friday in favour of Dr ; Hector Campora, the hand- j picked substitute for the ; former President, General i Juan Peron.
During the election campaign, President Lanusse made no secret of his distaste for Peronism: he was himself imprisoned for four years for plotting against General Peron, who was finally overthrown by a military coup in 1955.
