‘Care’ with prayers

“If there is a more reliable way to water our land than praying for rain we should actively pursue it with all the means at our disposal,’’ Mr R. M. Fechney, of Aylesbury, told an irrigation seminar at Darfield after relating a story about another drought that was followed by a flood. The week-end of May 5, he said, was the fiftieth anniversary of a North Canterbury flood, which came after a drought so serious that people were praying at church for rain. Mr Fechney was a small child living near Waiau at the time and he could remember the occasion vividly. The rain started on Saturday and continued without let-up until Monday, when 33in had fallen. The damage was enormous, he said. Fences and bridges were washed away, whole hillsides had slipped and there were heavy losses of stock.
