Lebanon quieter
(IV. Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BEIRUT, May 7. Arab mediators today were trying to bring life back to normal in Lebanon after fierce clashes between the Lebanese Army and Palestinian commandos which left about 300 people dead. The Arab League Secre-tary-General (Mr Mahmoud Riad) told reporters after meeting Lebanese Government ministers and commando leaders yesterday that the crisis which began last Wednesday was easing. The meetings, attended by mediators from other Arab countries, especially Egypt and Syria, were taking place against a background of optimistic statements and a comparative lull in the fighting. After a meeting at the Presidential Palace last night, the Prime Minister (Mr Amin Al-Hafez) told reporters that he was making day and night efforts to ensure security and stability in the country in a way that would serve both Lebanon’s sovereignty and the Palestine cause. There have been no official estimates of the death toll in three days of bitter fighting that erupted on Wednesday, but it is estimated that about 300 troops, commandos and civilians were killed.
