Breeding cows to $133 at Culverden
v Breeding cows met a fair Inquiry at the Culverden adult car, e sate on Friday, but some » of the heifers were hard sell--1 ins. C It was not a day of high , prices, but in view of the weaker - markets at Addington last week, : it was, with some exceptions, 1 satisfactory. ; The yarding of 637 head ini' eluded 220 calves. These had. 1 quite a satisfactory sale. The principal entry was a line of 65 Hereford steer calves from the estate W. H. Atkinson, of Mason Hills. They sold from $56 to $B6 for a pen average of $7O, which . was a good return at this stage of the season. The best of the i heifer calves—some Angus and - Angus-cross—from J. James, of . Maruia, fetched $65. Some of the breeding heifers ’ met a restricted inquiry, and 1 several pens were passed. W. A. j NeweU (Waiau) topped the section with a pen of 11 2J-year-old ‘ Herefords, tested in calf, at $l6O. i A further 10 fetched $l5B, and 1 15 Angus $l3B. Breeding cows drew regular Interest from outside buyers, and those pens which had been
tested in calf were considered to have had a fair sale. M. F. Vernon (Waiau) topped the section with a pen of mixed aged Angus-Hereford cross cows, tested in calf, at $133. The ‘ same vendor had other sales at s!■ and $llO. * There was regular inquiry ’ from Mid-Canterbury and the Christchurch district, and seme ■ sales were made to the West * Coast and Nelson. 3 Sales included:— j Cows: W. (Culverden), 26 Angus-cross, - tested in calf, at $124 to $126; I 12 Angus at $lO6, 10 Herefords . at $100; E. G.\ O. Rutherford I (Hanmer Springs), 50 18-month old Herefords, empty, at $B6 to r $lOl (average $95); Burrows , Brothers (Bexhill), 9 18-month-i old Herefords, empty, at $9O.
