Anniversary of marching
The 25th anniversary of the Canterbury Marching Centre was celebrated in Christchurch recently with former marching girls and administrators travelling from as far as Auckland in the north and Dunedin in the south. The first function was a roll call of past officers and committee members. The present President, Mr. S. N. Marshall, welcomed all members and called upon Major E W Roxie, the second President of the Centre, to cut the jubilee cake A cabaret was held at the Manhatten Hall, which war. decorated with the names of the 186 teams registered during the past 25 years. Ouruhia Domain was the '*nue for the roll call of former marching girls, fol-
lowed by a barbecue lunch and the afternoons entertainment started with a March Past of some of the earlier teams, as well as a number of present teams. The highlight of the afternoon was an item by a "golden oldies” group, performing the 1950-51 march plan. All of these members started marching within the first two years of the Canterbury Centre being formed and after only five practices, acquitted themselves with distinction. The team was presented to three former Presidents of the Centre. Maior Bovle. Mr. A. W. Fergus and Mr. G. T. Henderson. Mr H. E. Timpson, a life member, presented each member with a medal to commemorate the first 25 years of marching in Canterbury'.
