The coat of arms
The arms of then University of Canterbury (afcove) were approved by the Kings of Arms in 1965. Previously Canterbury Col-; lege had accepted .the arms; of the Canterbury Associa- ; tion which found! :d the province and these i were used from the universe's foundation in 1873. When the University of Canterbury achieved its independence in 1961 the University of Canterbury Council sought its own coat of arms and made application to the Earl Marshal of B ngland and; the Kings of Anns grantedthe armorial ensigns. In the centre of the murrey-coloured ’shield is a fleece symbolising the pastoral pursuits of .Canterbury, and beneath it a pljough symbolising agriculture. The open book, represents learning and the Hishops’ nail signifies Canterbury’s ecclesiastical connections. , The wavy lined:/indicative of lands The heraldic di scription of the coat of arms; |s? “ Murrey —a fleece argent; in base a plough on a chief (wavy or an open book prtoper bound murrey edged ami clasped or between a pael teiure charged with four crasses formy fitchy or and a cross flory' azure”.
