James loses 3-setter
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The 17-year-old Christchurch player, A. James, fought out a three-set match with the New Zealand junior champion, R. J. Simpson (Auckland), in the first round of the Surrey hard-court tennis championships yesterday. James put up his best performance against Simpson, in losing 6-7, 7-5, 2-6. In other first round matches, R. McGhie (Auckland) was beaten, 7-6, 6-2, by C. M. Robinson (Lancashire), and N. Boyne (Auckland) went down, 3-6, 2-6, to S. J. Mathews (England).
Golf.— Navy beat Air Force. 9-3, and Police defeated Army, 64-51, in the annual Services golf tournament at Auckland yesterday.
Rugby.—Transvaal, the South African Currie Cup champion, beat the University of Paris, 22-10, in a Rugby match. Transvaal led 18-0 at half time.
