New job for former M.P.
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2
The former Undersecretary for Agriculture, Mr A. D. Dick, has been appointed executive director of the Sheep and Cattlemen’s Association, an organisation incorporated last October.
A former DirectorGeneral of Agriculture, Mr D. Webb, will be the general secretary.
Although many members of the association previously belonged to the Wool Action Committee—which opposed compulsory acquisition—Mr Dick said today that the new organisation was not an offshoot of the committee.
Mr Dick, M.P. for Oamaru until his defeat at the General Election, said the association was designed to complement Federated Fanners, “not to destroy.” There were more than 24 fanning organisations, yet not one dealt specifically with the affairs of sheep and cattle fanners.
The association would work through the electoral college of the Meat and Wool Boards, and through the federation, Mr Dick said.
Mr Dick believes that the association could be the means of healing the rift caused by the Wool Marketing Corporation Act.
“It is encouraging to note that many members of this association are also members of the federation,’’ Mr Dick said. “A united farmers’ voice today is more imperative than ever before.”
