Mining issues stronger in Australia

Trade on Australian exchanges was quiet yesterday but prices firmed. All sections found support, with the mining board making the largest gains on the day. Over all, rises and falls were in balance. C.R.A. was steady at 596 c, Bougainville Copper was 7c higher at 262 c, Hamersley was steady, and N.B.H.C. rose 5c at 330 c.

Other mining stocks that firmed included M.I.M. which regained Tuesday’s loss of 12c at 260 c.

Peko Wallsend also recovered 50c at 810 c, and Robe River was 4c higher at 80c.

Great Boulder rose 5c at 135 c as did W.M.C. at 250 c, and North Broken Hill was 4c higher at 150 c. On the oil boards, Wood-side-Burmah gained 15c at 255 c, and its 30c paid contributing shares were 11c

higher at 225 c. A.A. Oil was 3c higher at 93c, but Beach Petroleum eased 1c at 32c. Endeavour Oil was also 1c down at 9c, and Bridge Oil was steady at 17c. On the industrial board, B.H.P. rose 6c at 840 c, Colonial Sugar was 15c higher at 470 c. The Herald was steady at 390 c, and News Limited gained 1c at 420 c. Retailers were stronger. Myers gained 5c at 269, Coles 1c at 152 c, and David Jones 2c at 150 c. Woolworths was 1c higher at 100 c and Waltons was unchanged at 200 c.

Banks were mixed, with the National gaining 1c at 321 c, the C.B.A. and the Bank of Adelaide were steady at 365 c, and 270 c respectively. The Bank of N.S.W., however, was 4c lower at 890 c.

Comalco was unchanged at 303 c, and E.Z. Industries was 2c higher at 370 c. SYDNEY
