Steeplechase named after great jumper

Moral was to Riccarton what another famous grey, Kumai, was to Trentham, and Mr W. E. Hazletts famous jumper will have a race named after him at the next Grand National meeting. It will be the Koral Steeplechase, not the Lincoln, for the top ’chasers on the final day. It was after Koral was beaten by Enceeoh in the Lincoln last year that Mr Hazlett decided to call it a day, and the 12-year-old

Kurdistan gelding went into retirement with a splendid record of 12 jumping wins at Riccarton. The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club has also decided to place the Grand National Hurdles on the programme for the third day of its meeting in August. The Sydenham Hurdles, which disappeared from the Grand National meeting three, years ago, will reappear this; year, and will be run on the. second day for a stake of $2450. The Sydenham Hurdles: winner may be rehandicapped no more than 51b for the Grand National Hurdles. The club has increased the stake for the Heathcote Handicap, the main flat event on the second day, from $2500 to $3OOO and the Islington: Handicap will be worth $3500. A maiden race will be added to the programme for the final day of the meeting.
