Bangladesh’s need
Bangladesh faced a serious food shortage this year if she was to avoid starvation and build up stocks to a prudent level before the 1973-74 autumn harvest, the United Nations Secretary-General (Dr Kurt Waldheim) said today. In a report on the progress of relief measures for Bangladesh, Dr Waldheim referred to experts’ assessments that 2.5 million tons of grain would have to be imported to maintain a daily ration of 15 ounces for the country’s 75 million people.— New York, May 2.
