Higher standards for Worsleys Rd proposed
Proposals by property-owners at Worsleys Road for its formation to 14ft and sealing to 12ft were not accepted at a joint meeting between the Paparua and Heathcote county councils, a meeting of Paparua’s rural district council was told yesterday.
The unformed road is the boundary between the counties, and following the refusal of both councils to form the road, propertyowners petitioned, asking Paparua to form and seal the road from the bottom of the hill to Mr K. R. Uren’s property. The rural council was told yesterday that the petitioner’s price of $lB,lBO was "vastly less” than the council’s earlier estimate for a full-width road, and that the petitioners expected threesevenths of the cost to be met by the National Roads Board, with the balance of the cost shared between the property-owners. It was agreed to tell the petitioners that the councils would agree to an 18ft formation and 12 ft seal, with comer widening, and that the staff discuss the reading specifications with the property-owners.
The County Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) referred to delays by the Ministry of Transport in reporting to the council on requests for changes in speed limits, and road improvements. “We should encourage the Ministry to improve its staffing so as reports can be made to the council more speedily than the usual three months,” he said. On the motion of Cr R. S. Mayer, it was decided to tell the Ministry of the council’s concern at delays, and to ask for speedier service. The rural council again held over decisions on speed limits for West Melton and Sparks Road, and on a request for improvements to the junction of the Akaroa Highway and the Old Tai Tapu Road.
