Viet Cong visitors
Sir,—The Government should be very careful that it is not pressured into contributing to the reconstruction of North Vietnam. The Committee on Vietnam has as its object the delivering of money and materials from New Zealand as an act of conscience because we were involved in the war. It would like such contributions to be regarded as war reparations. In my judgment, the giving of aid at any point in time to an erstwhile enemy is unwise; but at this particular moment, while North Vietnam is still engaged in active aggression in the South, and in Cambodia, such an act would be one of extreme moral and legal stupidity. The Committee on Vietnam has an obvious political bias, and its motives in inviting Viet Cong and North Vietnamese representatives to wait on the New Zealand Government should be seen by all to be patently political.—Yours, etc., SARATOGA. April 30, 1973.
