TALKS ON REPORT

slom plans in irrigation CN.Z. Press Association? OAMARU, April 29. Irrigation was a national asset and therefore a Government responsibility, the Under-Secretary for Agriculture (Mr Barclay) told a combined meeting of irrigation committees in Oamaru on Saturday night. He envisaged an expenditure of slom by the Government on irrigation over the next 20 years.

Mr Barclay was chairman of the Labour caucus committee on irrigation which recently reported to the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) on proposals for the development of irrigation in line with the Labour Party’s election policy. The meeting last night, with the combined North Otago Irrigation Committees, was not open to the press, but Mr Barclay said later that he had discussed the caucus irrigation committee’s report to get farmers’ reactions. He said the report was not available for publication, but the recommendations, if implemented, would have farreaching implications for the administration and development of irrigation schemes. “The Labour Government sees tremendous scope for the development of irrigation schemes, particularly in Otago and Canterbury and I north of the South Island,” ihe said.
