Feed barley released
Conscious of the need of farmers faced by extreme drought conditions for feed grains, the Canterbury (N.Z.) Malting Company, Ltd, has released thousands of bushels of barley. This was confirmed last evening by the manager of the company (Mr H. P. Kearney). Ba..ey had gone to areas where the drought was worst, said Mr Kearney. It had been going to Nelson and Blenheim for several days as well as being available to Central Otago and Southland.
However, the pressure for supplies now seemed to be coming from Mid and North Canterbury and there was doubt whether there were sufficient supplies of feed grains available. Although his company expected to have more feed grains, some would not become available until later in the season.
Feed grains became available with the dressing of barley for malting and the company had not taken delivery of all barley from the season’s harvest.
Mr Kearney said that the company had been influenced in its decision to release barley for feed by the pressing need and that in this way it could help farmers on whose support it relied for growing crops.
Only a little more rain fell in Canterbury over the week-end. Timaru had one of the heaviest falls—llmm (44 points) in the 48 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday. In the same period Oamaru had 7mm, Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs and Hororata each had a little more than 2mm but at Harewood the fall was less than this.
