Waterfront stoppage

The walk-out on the Wellington waterfront on Tuesday which resulted in some cargo being left in the Rangatira was a protest against working conditions in the freighter Westmoreland, at present loading meat and general cargo, a Wellington Watersiders’ Union spokesman said today. There was a stop-work meeting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. and half an hour later all ships were made weathertight and secure, and work stopped for the day. said the spokesman (Mr G. Goddard). Mr Goddard said that the union followed its custom of working the Rangatira. apart from trade goods. Only livestock. passengers’ cars and baggage. furniture. and perishable goods were worked. Work resumed this morning. and it is not expected that the union will repeat its action
