Recital in Cathedral

Another recital in the series planned in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will be given on April 16.

This time the recitalist will be William Hawkey, reader in music at the University of Canterbury and musical director of the Christchurch Harmonic Society. Mr Hawkey received his first musical tuition from his father. He continued his studies under teachers of piano and organ, acquiring amongst other qualifications his F.T.C.L. as an organist. He has continued to perform on this instrument as soloist, accompanist, choral organist, and teacher.

Mr Hawkey will perform the Passiontide, Easter and Ascension sections of the Chorale Variations of the Orgebuchlein, by Bach. In these variations, Bach establishes a style quite his own. The chorale melody appears unadorned in the top line. The other lines employ canonic and other contrapuntal devices, but most important of all, they are conceived to suit the words and spirit of the chorale. Each variation will be preceded by a reading of the (German verse and its translation by Barry Epsom.
