UK v. U.S.A. Would you please point out
to your correspondent "Quality Before Quantity” that TV programmes are not intended for his or her sole enjoyment. This person icommendse “The Onedin .'Line” and “A Family at 'War” and wants to see other •British programmes. “DocTors” and “Owen, M.D.,” in I place of “Marcus Welby, M.D.” Well, I don’t. Those who prefer American programmes have equal right to at least a share of the viewing time. 1 watch, and mildly enjoy, “Marcus Welby, M.D .” as it’s such a welcome respite from sickening British accents and raucous voices. We are inflicted with roughly 90 per cent of overseas programmes of British origin, and I for one want to see a fair share of American programmes, regardless of whether they appeal to everyone else or not. YANKEE LOVER. [According to a survey of a recent week’s programmes, American productions have a greater proportion of viewing time in relation to British offerings. For afternoon programmes the figures were American 68 per cent, British 32 per cent; for evening programmes British productions gained 53 per cent to 47 per cent by American efforts. The over-all figures were American programmes 57 per cent, British 43 per cent.— Pandora.] Morecambe and Wise “Selective” has missed the point. I was not debating whether the N.Z.B.C. shows sufficient high quality programmes; only one series was being discussed. “Selective” has also fallen into his own trap by not stating which programme is preferred. By the way, I can’t stand "Marcus Welby.” LEO.
