New Caledonians beaten in boxing

The South Island threw the last punch when it heat the touring New Caledonians in a close amateur boxing contest, which featured a knock-out —at Canterbury Court last evening.

Although some of the: , fights were lack-lustre, 'the contest ended on a high note when the seventh bout between L. Rackley (Nelson) and R. Nebayes was fought to decide the over-all winner. Rackley won a closely-fought tight to give the South Island , the win by four bouts to three. i The contest started sensationally when T. Manate i (New Caledonia) knocked out T. Aumua (Christchurch) in the first round of the heavyweight fight—the second bout on the programme. The bout started slowly, with each fighter sizing each other up, but then half-way through the first round Manate threw his only effective punch'—a short right-cross—-and it was enough to floor Aumua. The Christchurch boxer was assisted from the ring, but recovered soon after. The contest also highlighted the one-hundredth fight for the New Caledonian light welter-weight, N. Kaouch, and he gained his century with a win over H. Bullmore (Christchurch) on points. The fight—one of the brighter bouts of the contest —was full of aggression with both boxers prepared to slug it out. Kaouch paced the fight better than Bullmore and was still full of punches when the final bell sounded. The first bout of the contest was a dull affair between the welter-weights, J. Mitichell (Christchurch) and N. ‘Maifano. Both boxers were (content to spar each other (and few clean punches were (thrown. Mitchell won on (points because he at least (made some attempt to show i aggression. The second welter-weight (bout, between M. Areli (Christchurch) and M. Hono-1

Rackley (Nelson) gained his decision the easy way when his > opponent. A. Boano, was dis- 1 r qualified in the third round of 1 1 the light middle-weight fight for ; > using his elbow. Rackley began ' the fight well and used his straight left hook to good ad-'j ' vantage and forced Boano into a ! . mandatory count in the first round. The New Zealand represent at tivc. K. FINAL BOUT The final bout—the middle- ’ i weight fight between L. Racklev 1 1 and Nebays—was the best of the r night as it featured good scienti- ' fic boxing as well as aggression. 1 Both boxers used long, hard - punches, but Rackley was the t -1 tidier fighter and earned his win 1 r ' by gaining cleaner hits In the supporting bouts the i 1 best fight was a feather- i
