Ecology action

Sir, —On a recent Saturday morning members of Ecology Action and their friends began their attempt to clean up the Estuary by attacking the junk-heap beside the Heathcote River opposite Ferrymead. Lack of adequate planning by the City Council, piece-meal sale of land to developers and industry, ad hoc policy decisions and conflict of local body interests have all contributed to neglect of the whole Estuary area: Ecology Action is not a collection of crack-pots but a group of serious-minded younger people of both sexes who care for the environment. Older citizens should not only take pride in this group’s determination to lead public opinion, but should be ashamed of their own lack of interest and their failure to see that elected civic leaders do something about the Estuary and its environs now before it is too late.— Yours, etc., GRAHAM RILEY. April 1, 1973.
