NUCLEAR TESTS

N.Z. view

given

WELLINGTON. April

New Zealand had made its attitude to atmospheric nuclear testing clear to China, said the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) this evening.

He said the visit of the Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Walding) to Peking had achieved more than New Zealand had expected.

One indication of this vs as that the Chinese Prime Minister (Chou En-lai) had made possible talks of about two hours, in which the pair had discussed topics ranging from trade to nuclear testing.

Asked if Mr Walding had expressed opposition to Chinese tests, Mr Kirk said that New Zealand opposed nuclear testing in the atmosphere everywhere, and would make this clear.

While its opposition at the moment had been expressed against French testing, it must not be interpreted that these were the only tests opposed. New Zealand opposed nuclear tests everywhere.

Mr Waiding’s briet had been to present to China New Zealand’s attitude on a number of subjects, and nuclear testing was one, said Mr Kirk.
