Coal leader welcomes Clean Air Act

The introduction of the Clean Air Act, which came into force on April 1. has been welcomed by the president of the South Island Coal Merchants’ Federation (Mr E. H. Lange).

Under the act. clean air zones may be set up by local bodies in urban areas where there is a special need to reduce pollution. The regulations cover all sources of pollution, including motor vehicles.

Mr Lange said that the coal industry had done much over recent years to reduce pollution, with the result that the level of sulphur in domestic coal was now at an average level of 0.4 per cent. High sulphur content coal which was a known contributor to air pollution had now been virtually phased out. Mr Lange said that there was no doubt that coal did contribute to air pollution in Christchurch, the most obvious contribution being smoke from the open fire. I “But the coal industry is putting every effort into reducing this smoke emission by educating the public in better methods of tending the fire, and by encouraging the installation of the new downdraught clean-burning coal appliances of high efficiency and with low smoke emission.” he said. “The New Zealand Coal Research Association, formed in 1967, has dealt with a wide

i range of research projects inIvolving the development of ■ systems that will ensure i greater convenience and (cleanliness in handling and ; using coal and providing a ; nationwide advisory service to coal users.” said Mr Lange. i .
