Shortened, courses in nursing
The importance of shortened courses in nursing education was emphasised by the matron-in-chief to the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Miss D. R. Newman) this week. The 'courses were planned by the Nursing Council of New Zealand to give nurses
registered under the Nurses Act 1971 an opportunity to broaden their educational preparation as a basis for improved patient care, and to gain registration in additional fields of nursing. , At a meeting of the hospijjtal board this week Miss; .Newman asked that the: [courses be given high prior-! slity. She said that psychiatric’
and psychopaedic nurses in particular had waited for years for such a general shortened course. "Nurses in New Zealand believe this to be a necessary interim step to upgrade .earlier programmes while a basic comprehensive programme is being developed,” (said Miss Newman. ! "It is also an important step towards the eventual
i integration of all nursing r services.” I The board agreed to the institutions committee’s re--1 commendation that the psy- - chiatric programme should 3 begin as soon as possible, t but the general programme - would not be undertaken ’ (until satisfactory financial arrangements were made t regarding the appointment of I a tutor.
