Taylor, led the field by one stroke after the opening I round in Australia’s first pro (fessional women's golf (tournament, which began yesI terday. She defied a strong wind ‘and rain-soaked fairways to (return a three-over-par 75 at I the Wollongong Golf Club ‘course. On 76 were another New Zealander, Miss M. I Smith, and Miss B. Dalgleish ;(New South Wales). The $3OOO event, which I continues at Moss Vale today and Nowra tomorrow, is sponsored by a washing ‘machine manufacturer, i Miss Taylor resigned her ijob as a teacher at Surfers Paradise four weeks ago to ■ try her luck as a professional golfer. , The two birdies in her I round were at the fourth i where she holed a putt from |five feet and the ninth where • she sank a 10-footer. Miss Smith struck the ball in resounding style, had four ! birdies, but lost her chance of leading the field when she took a two-over at the short ‘seventeenth. There was a gala occasion about the tournament, and the 12 professionals starting the tour began by toasting each other in champagne on the first tee.
