WOUNDED KNEE
No end to siege (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) RAPID CITY (South Dakota), March 29. Attempts to bring about a bloodless end to the occupation of Wounded Knee by militant American Indians dragged on today amid what appeared to be a serious rift in their leadership. There was no sign of Marlon Brando at the tiny settlement 125 miles south-east of Rapid City where United States troops massacred 146 Indians 83 years ago. Brando, through an Apache I Indian, Sasheen Littlefeather,! refused the best actor of thei year film Academy Award on ! Tuesday night. It is far from clear if the] militant leaders of the; American Indian Movement (A.1.M.), Messrs Dennis Banks and Russell Means, ] have been ousted by moderates as reported on Tuesday. A meeting was called at Rapid City after a split in the Indian hierarchy at Wounded Knee and an unconfirmed armed confrontation between moderates and militants.
