Wrapping it up
(From Our Own Reporter! WESTPORT, March 27. Buller butter suppliers might well ask the question, “what’s in a name?” For a time after the fire at the Karamea company's factory last year the company distributed outside butter in the district packaged in Westland wrappers. Then it was found that a supply of the familiar Karamea parchment was stored in a Christchurch factory and it is now being used again, but to wrap the Westland product. When that supply is exhausted the Karamea concern will probably get
more such wrappers printed but still to wrap Westland butter for distribution in the Buller area only. A spokesman for the Karamea company explained that all butter made in its factory is sent to Christchurch to be kept in cold storage — and packed in another name. He added that the wrapping machine was out of action permanently and in any case the cost of converting it to metrics would be too great. The company now runs a milk-powder industry. A reminder for readers: The West Coast comprises Buller, in the north, and Westland in the south.
