LOSER
Some people, it seems, just can not win. Fortune may seem to favour them for a moment, but it is only a prelude to the rug being pulled from under them. One such, apparently destined for a life-long role of being the target forthe custard pies, plays golf at Templeton. He shares with most golfers the habit of having small wagers on his matches. And the other day. he and his partner beat two of their friends, and were thus, each, 20 cents the richer. At least, our hero's part-
ner was. He was paid- But one of the losers went off and forgot to meet his debt. But he remembered, when he was a mile or two from the course, and therefore resolved to meet his obligations. He sent the 20 cents to the winner, through the post blit there was a little note with it. First, he apologised for the delay in payment. He congratulated the victor on his victory; and he expressed the fervent hope that the 20 cents would be devoted towards a fund for the purchase of a new golf
ball, a wish born, he said, j of the obvious need for a replacement in view of the 1 savage treatment the present one had suffered during the round. But there was injury, as well as insult. The winner wrote back, acknowledging receipt of the 20 cents, but making . some stern criticism of the method of payment. Because the Post Office had detected a 20 cent piece in the envelope, had registered the envelope. ; and the recipient had been required to pay 36 cents ; to have his mail.
