TWO PHOSPHATE CARRIERS DUE
The arrival of two bulk car-1 Tier?, with phosphate at one time; b lairly unusual at Lyttelton, says the harbourmaster (Captain ; D.' Holden), but there have been , three simultaneous arrivals in the past By any standards. Lyttelton s record as a bulk-cargo receiving port is impressive. In the year ended February 28. 171.014 tons of bulk cargo were received at the port Tnis does not include the Kashima Maru (Japanese), now due from Christmas island, and the Belita (Norwegian,. from Ocean Island, both regular callers. Lyttelton s deep-water facilities allow these heavy-laden vessels to lighten up before proceeding to shallower ports, and Lyttelton’s discharging facilities ire modern. Of the total of 171.014 tons, 15,174 tons were phosphate from Nauru Island. Ocean Island, and Christmas Island. Bulk gypsum (for wallboard manufacture) totalled 18.268 tons—all from South Australia. From Vancouver and the Mexican Gulf came 30,546 tons of sulphur. Soda ash from California and the Mississippi totalled 4392 tons. From Japan. Belgium, and Vancouver came 8594 tons of ammonium sulphate. Potash 112,431 tons) came from Vancouver, which also sent 1609 tons of ammonium phosphate. A letter received yesterday from Captain E. Rainbow, of Islington (formerly of Lyttelton), has solved the mystery of the late Captain H. S. Collier’s nickname. “Two-Gun Pete.” Captain (oilier was referred to in this column after an inquiry from *'L.E .” of Timaru, one Thursday Captain Rainbow (a former Union Company masteri said that he served as an ordinary seaman in the barque Gladbrook (formerly a coal hulk—the County of Angelsea—at Lyttelton. but restored by the Union Company to a three-masted barquei. On the 64-day passage from Port Chalmers to San Francisco with a full load of pelts, the late Captain Corby was in command. The chief officer was Two-Gun Pete.” and the second officer was the late Captain D N. McLeish. of Lyttelton. Captain Rainbow writes that Captain Collier would walk up and down the poop with both thumbs stuck in his trouser pockets, and it was then that the crew named him “Two-Gun Pete.” The unusual lemonMjueerer Army-style hats Captain Collier wore ashore came later. Captain Collier encouraged Captain Rainbow to study foi his certificates, and later the latter served under Captain Collier as third officer in another ship Captain Collier referred to Captain Rainbow as “one of the boys.” ARRIVALS Hawea <6.32 am). 2926.
