Fishing limits
Sir,—Concern is being ex- ] pressed at the invasion of] our territorial water by; Japanese and other poachers.! The Japanese, having fished] out their own waters, or pol-] luted them to the extent that' the remaining fish are no] longer edible, are now] marauding upon every ocean in the world, not forgetting] the Mediterranean. While re- ■ ceipts from fishing form only ] a small part of our nationall income, the prospects in this; direction are quite favour-. able. Being in this position ] we can sympathise with the tiny island republic of Ice-! land, who. lacking both soil I and climate for intensive ] agriculture, and having little industry, derives 75 per cent ]of its national income from 'fishing. Whv do powerful industrial nations like Britain land West Germany continue;
to poach in their territorial waters? — Yours, etc.,
JOHN J. FORSTER. March 23, 1973.
