New look at the unborn
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The National Women’s Hospital, Auckland, will soon be the first hospital in New Zealand to have a new type of electronic scanning machine which will allow doctors to check the growth and condition of unborn children. The machine, called an ultrasonic scanner, has been bought in Britain for $23,000. It is expected to arrive in a few weeks. It has been obtained on the recommendation of Mr Bruce Faris, an obstetrician who is also a member of the Auckland Hospital Board.
The ultrasonic scanner uses very high-frequency sound waves to project an image of the foetus onto a screen. It is in some ways similar to an X-ray examination, but there is no radiation effect or hazard.
