Funny Way Wingatui pick

T.A.B. double: races 5 and 7

Funny Way is expected to be the stumbling block for (hippie when the Washdyke sprinter attempts to preserve his unbeaten record for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday.

Grippie did not have Funny Way in opposition when he won easily on the first day of the meeting last Saturday. The runner-up was Funny Way’s stablemate, Uncle Felix. The combined talents of Funny Way, Lady Mellay, and Audaciter, all newcomers at the meeting, will heighten interest in the Autumn Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. concession double tomorrow. And if Grippie meets all the demands of the situation he will probably be at more generous odds than when he won over the same distance last Saturday. LAST MEETING Funny Way gave a superior performance to Grippie’s when they last met, in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s N.Z. Breweries Handicap at Riccarton on February 7. Funny Way was third, behind Baltic Blue and Circus Girl, a placing he would have almost certainly bettered if the race had taken a different turn.

Funny Way started from towards the outside of the field, and, in a bid to get reasonably close to the rails, J. R. Dowling tried for the pacemaker’s role. However, the Wingatui combination had no rest in front, and the attentions of Hombre in a speed duel might have had a bearing on the result. Grippie, fifth in that race, will meet Funny Way 61b worse tomorrow. FIRST LEG Bonney Belle, another fresh runner at the meeting, is the top fancy for the Wingatui Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. In the form she held the day she won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer Handicap, Bonney Belle would win tomorrow’s race with a bit to spare.

She was one of the failures in the Benson and Hedges Inter-Island event four days after her Midsummer Handicap victory, but she was running against some of New Zealand’s best middle-dis-tance performers that day. Besides, both races were run only a few days apart in energy-sapping heat, and Bonney Belle would not be the first of the stock of Bellborough to come up with a confused pattern of form when embarked on fairly concentrated programmes. If Bonney Belle fails to come back with one of her best runs at a distance she has already handled with some credit—she was runnerup in the C.J.C. Metropolitan at Riccarton last November— Menado and Jane Mellay will probably be the dominating [figures in the finish.

I They were first and second 1 respectively, separated by a j nose, over Ilf last Saturday, i and Menado came right from j ■the tail of a 13-horse field for ) • his victory. |< I Selections are: 2 p.m—Janefield Brush Hurdles: Mr Spock, Wattle's I Wish, Dave's Gift.
