Obituary MR A. J. PATERSON
f.v.z press Association' NEW PLYMOUTH. I A former North Island Taranaki Rugby selector. Mr A. J Paterson, died at New Plymouth on Wednesday. He was 65 j Mr Paterson «as recognised as one of Taranaki’s finest Rugby coaches. He was a member of the Taranaki selection panel for nine years from 1953 to 1961. and coach of the team from 1956 to During that time. Taranaki 1 achieved some of its greatest ■ moments, including a 3-3 draw against the 1956 Springboks, winning the Ranfurly Shield in 1957.’ and defending it 13 times before! losing it to Southland in the; fifth defence match of the 1959 season Mr Paterson was a North Island selector for five years from 1965 to 1969. He was also a member of the famous New Plymouth Bovs' High School Rugby teams of the mid-19295. and was captain of the team in 1924 when it held the Moascar Cup. then svmbol of Rugby supremacy among New Zealand secondary schools. Mr Paterson was a life member of the Taranaki Rugby Union, ; and a former president. 5
