Temporary imports
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Government would allow temporary imports of building materials to meet shortages on the local market, the Minister of Housing (Mr Fraser) said in an interview. Temporary imports will be issued in eases where the shortage of local materials has been established or where an acute shortage appears likely. However, said Mr Fraser, New Zealand manufacturers must first be given the opportunity to meet local demand. Shortages were caused by
stop-go policies in the building industry, Mr Fraser said, and this had also led to a shortage of skilled labour.
The shortages would also inhibit the Government’s building programme and plans to strengthen the building industry would have to be a gradual process.
A deputation from the Wellington - Hutt Valley Master Builders’ Association asked Mr Fraser to allow the temporary imports. Shortages were becoming critical in some areas, particularly for particle board, iron and weatherboards.
