Wool Corp. seen as “grower co-op.”
The desirability of introducing the Wool Marketing Corporation so as to provide it with full support from woolgrowers at the outset was emphasised by the meat and wool section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers at its meeting in Christchurch yesterday.
The section decided to endorse the views of the Dominion Meat and Wool Council of Federated Farmers that grower support be obtained from the outset and that the corporation be seen as a grower co-operative acting in the best interests of individual woolgrowers. Other points to be given i priority by the council and I its electoral committees were: consultation on annua! I price levels after the introi duction of compulsory acquisition: discussion on the ; jcreation of reserves and dis-’ persal of profits; and the ; future relationship of the: i Wool Board and the corporation on several matters of •major importance.
The section passed a remit from the Sheffield branch that the Meat Board be asked to investigate immediately the anomaly that the export ewe schedule is 100 per cent higher than the export wether schedule and to seek restoration of relativity between the two schedules. The section will find out from freezing companies the numbers of farmer-owned ewes awaiting slaughter. The section chairman (Mr 18. H. Palmer) said that unless farmers could clear old ewes | the breeding ewes would be Jon a restricted diet because! of the shortage of feed? i brought about by drought l I conditions. The outcome would be a lower lambing po-j .tential.
