Decisive yachting win at Lyttelton

The victory of J. Rountree and P. Townsend in the Canterbury R Class yachting championship at Lyttelton last week-end was almost as decisive as the success of P. G. Beaumont, G. S. Mander and R. Eastmond in the provincial Javelin contest at the same venue. The only defeat suffered by Rountree and Townsend was in the light and flukey conditions which prevailed on Saturday afternoon when A. W. Shields and J. Smith were 23sec ahead at the finishing line. Earlier that day Rountree and Townsend had won by 57sec and their margins on Sunday—4min Bsec in a 10-

Knot morning easterly and 3min 54sec when the wind freshened to about 15 knots a few hours later—testified to their superiority. Fittingly, the placings in the final heat were identical to the over-all order, with Rountree and Townsend beating B. Kitson and M. Willson, followed by Shields and Smith and R. Ineson and I. Le Page. The highlight of the national R Class season will be the Leander Trophy series, which begins at Evans Bay on March 2. It is anticipated that as many as 70 crews will be seeking the title won last year by A. Gardner and R. Palmer (Northland) at Timaru.
