TROTTING Top four-year-olds in Champagne Mile

If Double Cash, from Pukekohe, and the Washdyketrained Hi Foyle come up with peak runs in their respective heats of the Champagne Mile at Hutt Park Raceway this evening, it should ensure them of a start in the S7OOO Grand Final on the third night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s autumn meeting next Tuesday.

The special conditions of the Champagne Mile, an event for four-year-jolds only, weigh heavily in favour of the tightlyassessed horses. They meet rivals ranging from 2:19 class up at level marks.

Double Cash, one of the ' North’s most consistent ! ‘pacers, is one of two 2:13 ‘class pacers in this evening’s; ifirst heat. The other is the; IKumeu-trained Paul Gentry,) another in-form pacer which. will strengthen the prospect, ! of a northern win. But the northerners are unlikely to have things all ! their own way. This will be especially so if Armbro Free, whose five wins earlier in ‘the season took him to a 2:11 i mark, is thoroughly tuned up .for this, his first race since! the New Zealand Trotting, Cup meeting. ■ Other notable performers jfor the South should be Golden Guest and Ar Miss. Both ; these 2:14 class mares have shown outstanding ability at times. The latter was a little disappointing at Addington Raceway last Saturday night but Golden Guest showed ‘that she is on the improve when fourth in the Twilight, Handicap. Second heat Except for Van Glory, which has been right out of ‘form for some time. Hi Foyle and Stroll Away have the ; best rating among the form runners in the second heat. Hi Foyle’s six wins this season have earned her a 12:13 assessment. Stroll Away earned the same rating when he was successful at Addington Raceway on New Year’s night. These two and ; the highly promising Te Kao, a 2:15 class mare, should be the South’s strongest hopes. Irish Kiwi, Knightly, and ■ Leading Lass will represent the North in this heat. The former should be the best of this trio. He took a 2:14 /rating when he won the ! i Epsom Pace at Auckland two /starts back. ; I Outside the Champagne , Mile heats, the races which (will claim most attention to--night are the Vodka and i Evans Bay Handicap, the respective legs of the T.A.B. ‘concession double. Vodka Handicap Easton Light and Royal Forbes, from the North, and Canterbury’s Jason McCord /might battle it out for Vodka: Handicap honours. The issue; in the second leg should be; •• between Lordy Boy. Speedy! Guest, and Scottish Foil. : There will be an on-course j 'double on the Lyall Bay and York Bay Handicaps, and;
