Voting ratio in wards

The ward system of voting adopted by the Christchurch City Council for the next municipal elections gives five electors in the Avon ward the same voting strength as six electors in either the east, south, or north wards, according to the chairman of the Christchurch Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association (Mr M. O. Holdsworth). This illustrated one of the' fundamental weaknesses ofl the scheme and warranted' emphasis, he said. It was incorrectly reported in “The Press” yesterday that Mr Holdsworth said the scheme gave equal voting strength in the Avon and other wards.
