Govt lead sought
Although the Government had laid down certain standards to be observed for effluent discharges into rivers, it had not been able to give any lead as to how the de- ■ sired result s could be I achieved, Mr R. C. Saunders' 'said in Christchurch yester-| day. - Mr Saunders was making' submissions to the Regional I Water Board Tribunal for the: North Canterbury Wool and Fellmongery Company, Ltd, J Kaiapoi. “If guidance as to methods had been set, then industry would know where it stands,” Mr Saunders told the tribunal. “As it is, the defined standards have been set, but how are they to be attained? This particular industry is closely allied to the country’s primary economy and plays a most important part in it. “To say to it, ‘You find methods and get on with the job’ is surely somewhat harsh I and unrealistic," Mr Saunders said. Mr Saunders said the comi pany was aware of its obligations and it was prepared |to carry out improvements in stages and to spend a lot lof money to deal with pollui tion.
