Knock-out finalists

Burnside - West - University, after staging a late recovery, and Riccarton, comfortably, qualified to meet in the final of the A.N.Z. Bank knock-out cricket competition.

Burnside-West gained early wickets at Ham yesterday, and Suburban never really recovered. After 20 overs it was 61 for four and was finally dismissed on the final ball of the fortieth over for 130.

But the combined team slumped from 49 for two after 20 overs to 106 for eight after 35. However, D. G. Trist and P. A. Sharp, unnerved by the situation, steered their team to victory with two overs to spare. Against tight Riccarton bowling, Ashburton found runs hard to acquire at Hagley Oval, and only when P. E. Wallace and W. J. Bell were batting together did the visitors look likely to amass a big total. Apart from D. W. Stead who was dismissed for seven, the remaining Riccarton batsmen all contributed useful scores as the team methodically moved towards victory. The winning runs came in the thirty-fifth over when B. P. Isherwood ’ofted a drive to the boundary. Championship
