FIRE IN BOAT
Batteries worth $5OO were destroyed in a fire in the engine-room of the Waimana, a 60-ton fishing boat, early on Saturday. Some damage was also done to the boat itself in the fire, which was first reported at 5.51 a.m., while the craft was tied up at No. 2 wharf. The batteries destroyed were used for starting the boat’s j engine. Lyttelton and Central station firemen using breathing apparatus used carbon dioxide extinguishers
