] Mr Patrick Gray, who has been temporary head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F. 8.1. since J. Edgar Hoover died last May, was ] named by President Nixon ■ today as the agency’s second ’ permanent chief. Mr Gray, aged 56, is a former naval officer, assistant Attorney-General and a friend of Mr Nixon. Mr Hoover was director of the F. 8.1. from 1924, when it was founded, until his death.
Mr Gray’s appointment is for an indefinite period but has to be confirmed by the Senat-
