Bugging device
(N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 16.
A sophisticated electronic bugging device has been discovered in a House of Representatives hearing room where King Hussein of Jordan held a private conversation with Congressmen last week. The device was discovered on Monday in the Foreign Affairs Committee’s room, a Democrat Congressman, Mr Thomas Morgan said. Mr Morgan is chairman of the committee.
King Hussein talked about the situation in the Middle East with members of the committee last Wednesday in the same room. He was in Washington for a three-day visit.
The only other business conducted in the committee room after King Hussein met committee members was a public session of the committee to hear testimony from the Secretary of State (Mr William Rogers). The device, a metal box the size of a pack of cigarettes, was foreign-made but there was no indication of who placed it in the committee room, Congressional sources said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the affair.
