Poor response for Scott Base jobs

Disappointment at the poor number of applications for jobs with the New Zealand 1973-74 Antarctic research team was expressed in Christchurch yesterday by Mr R. B. Thomson, superintendent of the Antarctic Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

“We have less than half! the numbers we have had by this time in the last few years,” Mr Thomson said. ‘•‘What is particularly disappointing is the poor response to technical and professional: vacancies in the team, such as scientists and electronic’ technicians. “I felt we would have done : better, as there are more 1 qualified university graduates about today; and here is' an opportunity for some to make a start in a scientific, 1 discipline.”

That vacancies had been advertised a little earlier than usual could be a reason for a lack of interest. “Perhaps people are still on vacation, and so do not know about these jobs, at least I hope that is the reason,” Mr Thomson said. However, the “old campaigners” were still attracted to the Antarctic, he said. There has been a larger number of Scott Base veterans than usual applying to go back this year.
