PLAN FOR MERGER

P.M. to hear councils

The Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) will meet representatives of the Heathcote, Papatua. Mount Herbert. Akaroa. and Wairewa county councils to discuss proposals for their amalgamation.

The meeting will be at the Heathcote County Council chambers, Heathcote having taken the initiative in proposing an amalgamation of the group as an alternative to the scheme proposed by the Local Government Commission.

The County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) said that Heathcote had decided, before the General Election, to send a deputation to meet the then Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) to seek his support for the proposal. It had since become convenient for Mr Kirk to hear the representations in Christchurch. Under the commission’s scheme, Heathcote and Mount Herbert counties would join Christchurch City, Urban Paparua would come into the city, and its rural district would go to a new county based on Malvern. Akaroa and Wairewa counties mere, form a new county. Paparua and Wairewa are not committed to Heathcote’s scheme. The commission has said that it can be considered only when the commission’s own proposals have been dealt with.
