<A.Z.P..4.-Reuter—Copyright •

WANGANUI.

Central Districts spectacularly scored its first victory over a touring cricket side when it beat Pakistan by 104 runs in a thrilling finish to the match at Cook’s Gardens yesterday.

The last Pakistani wicket fell with 10 minutes to spare, B. J. M. Eurlong running out Pervez after a swift throw to the stumps by L. R. Cairns.

It was a suicidal attempt by the final Pakistan pair but the run out gave Central a welldeserved victory. Pakistan was set a target' of 256 runs in 150 minutes to win the match but was never in the hunt as. first, the pace bowler. B. Stewart, and later, the spinners. M. J. F. Shrimp-, ton and Furlc ng. caused considerable problems for the tourists. Pakistan started the last hour six witkets down for 103 and with a minimum of 15 overs remaining. Shrimpton and Furlong then bowled Centra! to victory as the Pakistan tail folded up. Pakistan b-d a chance to reach the arget set by Shrimpton at one stage but once the crt-am of the batting was gor e it was a mat-! ter of survival. Pakistan edded 53 runs in: 47 minutes vhen it resumed: its first inni igs in the morn- : Ing and declared at 250 fori

seven. leaving Central 86 runs ahead. Cairns was again the trump card for Central, taking both wickets to fall. Zaheer Abbas improved his score by four runs before he ' was bowled for 105, and Asif Iqbal was caught for 89. They’ put on 140 for the sixth wicket. Zaheer (17 fours and one (six) batted for 204 minutes and Asif Iqbal was in 165 minutes for his 89 (11 fours, and two sixes). Caims took: five for 63 off 18.5 overs. Central, intent on quick runs, scored 56 for the loss of three wickets in 68 min- ' utes before lunch, and con- ■ tinued forcing the pace and losing wickets regularly after i the interval. H. C. Sampson topped the scoring with 59 and the declaration was made at 169 for seven. Stewart struck three vita! blow’s in the 40 minutes of i play before tea. Sadiq was I first to go when Stewart followed through to take a caught and bowled, and then

he dismissed both Zaheer. who had punished him so severely in the first innings, and Asmat, to give him the honour of removing both openers in both innings. Furlong gained his first wicket of the match when I Khan, who was batting ; soundly, chopped a ball on to his stumps and he was out [for 35. Khan and Mushtaq I added 56 for the fourth wicket. More disaster was to follow for Pakistan, with J. H. Howell getting Mushtaq and Asif Iqbal in his third over. Shrimpton took a low catch to dismiss Mushtaq for 34 ;and Asif went without scor- ' ing when Howell held a catch inches from the ground. Asif was not happy with the caught and bowled decision of the umpire, Mr M. Rangi (Nelson), but the Pakistan captain was given out only after Mr Rangi had consulted the square-leg umpire, Mr S. Copelin (Taranaki). With 15 overs to be i bowled. Pakistan was 103 for [six and still needed to average 110 runs an over. In the fifth ! Shrimpton had Saleem caught Iby Furlong, and in the next lover Furlong sent back Raja. The overs were fast running out but Shrimpton howled Usman in the eleventh and the run out of Pervez ended the match.
