Glowing sky before ’quake
O’.Z. Prets Assn.—Copyright > MOSCOW. Jan. 17. A glow in the sky can herald an impending earthouake. according to Soviet Union scientists. Seismologists analysing phenomena surrounding the earthquake that devastated Tashkent in 1966 sav that the glowing sky before a tremor; is caused by a redistribution of electric charges in the Earth-atmosphere system. In a report by Tass, the scientists tell of measuring the electron concentration at stations in Tashkent and Alma Ata before the 1966 disaster. They say that the ionosphere was calm over Alma Ata, but; ‘‘a silent storm” of electrons, broke out over Tashkent several hours before the first shock, and residents observed the glow in the sky. Professor Valentin Ulomov, i deputy director of the Seis-i mology Institute of Uzbekistan. told Tass that the electric currents originate in the Earth in connection with “plastic deformations of rock masses before their rupture.” The electrons coming from the Earth’s interior changed the distribution of electric charges in the atmosphere, and caused the glow.
