(N.Z.PA.-Reuter — Copyright)

CANBERRA, Jan. 10

The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Gough Whitlam) announced yesterday he would visit New Zealand from January 20 to 23.

He told a press conference the dates had been the “happy thought” of the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Kirk). They coincided with the anniversary of the signing of the Canberra Pact in 1944 by the then Prime Ministers, John Curtin of Australia, and Peter Fraser, of New Zealand.

Mr Whitlam said the Secre- ( tary of the New Zealand De-; partment of Foreign Affairs j would visit Canberra from' next Thursday for talks with his Australian counterparts. ( The Canberra Pact wasj generally regarded as the ! first joint Australian-New; Zealand foreign policy initia-; tive. It sought a post-war' settlement in the South-west Pacific, but was later largelytaken over by the S.E.A.T.O. an ANZUS agreements.
