Bomb hoax
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. Jan. 10.
A bomb threat in a cruise ship heading for Auckland and which put New Zealand defence services on alert earlier this evening, has turned out to be a hoax.
The ship, the Marco Polo, was 260 miles west of North Cape when the Royal New' Zealand Navy at Wellington was alerted that a bomb threat had been received. Hours later, however, the Marco Polo’s master told the Navy that a search of the ship had failed to find a' bomb, and she was proceed-' ing normally. In the meantime, two Royal' New Zealand Navy ships, the frigate Taranaki and the survey ship Lachlan, both of which were in the Hauraki Gulf, had been alerted to go to the cruise ship’s assistance.
